Setting Goals

Posted by San Diego Fitness Training | 6:04 PM | , , , | 0 comments »

Setting goals is one of the most important things you must do in order to reach your full potential. I set goals every month. It's amazing when I do write my goals down, how many I end up accomplishing.

When you set a goal, It's like your planting a seed in your subconscious mind. You can set yearly goals, monthly, weekly and even daily goals. I make all my clients set a specific goal before starting their exercise program with me.

I dare you to write down 5 monthly goals for November. They can be related to work, money, relationship, social, anything you desire, write them down. Try to be specific as possible. Tape them up on a wall that you frequently look at. Again this is planting the seed.

Please share your goals.

Cancellations are Frustrating

Posted by San Diego Fitness Training | 11:59 AM | | 0 comments »

Being a personal trainer for the most is a great job. I make my own hours, I get to interact with different people all day, I work in a positive environment, and I get to teach what I love. So yes my job is great, although with the good comes some bad.

I only get paid when I'm working, I usually work split shifts, and I think for most trainers, the biggest concern is cancellations. It's impossible to avoid cancellations. Every trainer has to deal with them. The question is, how to deal with them?

I tell all my clients to give me a 24 hours notice if you need to cancel or its a charge session. I'm very lenient in this area. Clients do have good reasons sometimes to cancel and I understand how they would feel if in that circumstance I would charge them. I might even lose them as a client. So what do I do?

Any suggestions from fellow trainers?

One of the things I have taken on is making money online with my fitness business. This has completely changed the way I look at the Internet and the opportunity to make money with online training, selling services, and selling products.

Is the way of the future? What do you think?

Only 20 Minutes

Posted by San Diego Fitness Training | 12:27 PM | , | 0 comments »

The other day I was reading about a recent study on aerobic exercise. Researchers found that just 20 minutes of aerobic activity can help prevent memory deterioration (Source: JAMA).

Just think, exercising for minimal amount of time can help you remember those birthdays, lists, and events that you tend to forget. We'll maybe you don't want to remember those birthdays :)

Everyday there's more and more researches that shows all the benefits of exercise. Why is it so hard for people to be active? I've talked about this many times before. I understand why and at the same time, I don't. Whats stops you, besides yourself?

From what I have seen, the Biggest Loser can cause injury from their workouts. Believe me, I love the Biggest Loser and the obesity awareness it has caused. I just don't understand why they have those people doing plyometrics.

For those of you who aren't aware of plyometrics, Plyometrics is a type of exercise training designed to produce fast, powerful movements, and improve the functions of the nervous system, generally for the purpose of improving performance in a specific sport. (ex. speed jumping, sprinting, skipping)

Last weeks episode I was watching one of the obese men jump over a step around two feet high. This is makes no sense to me. Landing on your feet in an awkward way could possibly tear a knee ligament.

Why would you ever do this type of exercise with an obese client? Is this exercise going to help him lose more calories, burn more fat? Is he training for a sport that requires jumping, like basketball, I think not.

You have to look at the pros and cons of your exercise selection. I think by showing this type of exercise, others may try it at home, and probably get hurt in the process. Maybe the Biggest Loser is trying to get more viewers, who knows.

The last thing you want when starting an exercise program is injury. Believe me, I've been there. Injuries are the most uninspiring thing you can go through. Take care of your health, its your responsibility.

Too Tired to Workout

Posted by San Diego Fitness Training | 11:27 AM | , , | 0 comments »

What do you do when your too tired to workout? This is great question and often asked among my clients.

There are many solutions to this question. I'll go over a few that have worked for my clients and myself.

1. Drink a cup of coffee - even though I'm not a huge advocator of tons of caffeine, it's still a great way to help get to the gym with some energy.

2. Eat a protein bar - a quick source of protein never hurt.

3. Drink a 10 oz. glass of room temperature H2O - Dehydration is the #1 cause of fatigue.

4. Consume a Vitamin C and B complex - great vitamins for combating low energy.

There are many ways to help increase your energy. Find what works for you and apply it. Exercise itself is a great way to increase energy. I always feel better leaving the gym knowing that I just did something great for my body and mind.

I love sharing great information about exercise all the major benefits it has. Here's some excellent research on the prevention and treatment of diabetes.

"According to the National Center for Health Statistics, diabetes joins heart disease, cancer, strokes, and respiratory ailments as one of the leading causes of death nationwide. However, according to the International Diabetes Federation, up to 80% of type 2 diabetes is preventable by maintaining a healthy diet and increase physical activity."

This study found that 150 minutes a week of regular exercise reduced the development of adult onset diabetes by 58% compared to 31% for the drug Metformin. A total of 3,234 men and women aged 51 years old participated in this three year study.

Why am I telling you this? So you can share this with your friends, family and loved ones that exercise is essential in preventing many diseases and living a long and productive life. The research is there, now its up to you to put one foot in front of the other and start moving.

Exercise Research from IHRSA

Posted by San Diego Fitness Training | 7:29 AM | , | 0 comments »

I was reading a recent article on "The Healing Power of Exercise", from IHRSA. I wanted to share some of the findings.

I believe what I'm about to share is huge and is a big concern for parents. "According to a recent study by Johns Hopkins University, by 2015 nearly 24% of US children and adolescents will be overweight or obese. Research shows that children will reap immediate dividends and long-lasting benefits from exercise".

Study Results: Adolescents who participate in a range of physical activity are less likely to engage in high risk behaviors and more likely to have higher grades than those who engage in sedentary behavior.

They did a study of 11,957 adolescents that stressed regular exercise and parental involvement. There were many benefits of regular exercise with the adolescents and fewer instances of high risk behavior such as - use of illegal drugs, violence, sexual intercourse, & delinquency. Another huge benefit, they had higher self esteem, which is very important in those developmental years.

If your truly care about your children, you'll start to implement some sort of exercise, sport or fitness activity into their lives. You'll be setting them up for years of success.

I had a question the other day from a client of mine. They were telling me how stressful their lives were and if I had any suggestions how to help regulate their stress.

I told her about chronic stress and what happens to your body under stressed conditions. When your under stress, your body releases a hormone, called cortisol. Have you ever heard of eHow? It's a website where you write on topics you know about and get paid. It's actually pretty cool. You probably won't be able to quite your day job, but it can be a good supplement to your income.

So you start off with a "How to" topic. For me I write about health and fitness. Example, "How to Workout with Resistance Bands", is one of my articles. Getting paid depends on how many articles you write, the quality of those articles, and how active you are with the members and your friends. If you get a chance visit my profile and rate my articles. That helps me get paid.

Here's a great opportunity for you all. If anyone out there would like to post an article on my blog related to health and fitness I would be open to reviewing it, and posting it on my blog with your website link. Remember, the more links you have out in cyberspace, the more traffic, and the better ranking you'll have with Google.

What is IBS?

Posted by San Diego Fitness Training | 7:53 AM | , , | 0 comments »

What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome? Every once in awhile I have a client who has this condition. I want to share some interesting facts of this disorder and to educate others that may need help.

One of clients mentioned that right after he would eat cheese or dairy, he almost immediately would have to go the bathroom. He knew it was IBS, but didn't know how to treat it. I did some research and I recommended taking a supplement called Juice Plus. Within three weeks his symptoms were gone. I was blown away that his symptoms vanished after three weeks. This is why I totally believe in taking supplements.

Irritable bowel syndrome is a very common disorder with recurrent abdominal pain and diarrhea alternating with constipation.

IBS may be caused by a disturbance in the muscle movement in the large intestine, triggered by anxiety, stress, or food intolerance. IBS affects more women than men.

Symptoms

  • Cramp-like abdominal pain, usually after eating
  • Swelling of abdomen
  • Excessive gas
  • Headache and back pain
  • Anxiety

Treatments

  • Vitamin A is necessary to keep the intestinal tract healthy
  • Take acidophilus to encourage the growth of healthy bacteria
  • A deficiency of zinc and B6 is indicated in many cases
  • Dietary fiber helps to detoxify
  • Include plenty of fiber in diet-helps body get rid of harmful toxins

Facts

  • 10-20% of the population suffers from IBS
  • Up to 50% of all health cases dealt with by gastroenterologist are caused by IBS

Always consult your Doctor with any symptoms or conditions with your body. Taking supplements may help, but having a Doctor diagnose your problem is crucial and highly recommended before trying to treat yourself.
